LBI is composed by an interdisciplinary team with Medical Doctors, Veterinarians, Medical Technologists, Analytical Chemists and Physicists. This team received different awards and distinctions and is involved in numerous projects with industry in the areas of biological evaluation of scaffolds for tissue engineering, expression and purification of bone growth factor, utilisation of biological tissues in the biomaterials area and collection of Stem cells. One of the major working fields of this interdisciplinary institute is related with wound and bone healing and the use of adequate animal models to test biomaterials. LBI has been also involved in the development of surgical adhesives such as fibrin glue, which is also being used to enhance cell adhesion onto biodegradable scaffolds.
